PHILGBC invites members, colleagues and partners in celebrating Christmas.  A simple Christmas gathering is happening on December 19, 2017 at Mayuree II at Dusit Thani Manila at Makati City from 11:00am to 2:00pm, coinciding with the PHILGBC Annual General Membership Meeting and Elections for the Board of Trustees.  

Members contribution of Php 2,500 will be collected per participant.

Discovering Green Buildings in Metro Manila

PHILGBC Chairman and Co-President of The Net Group, Mr. Raymond Rufino shares about the green features of The Net Park building at the Bonifacio Global City at Taguig to participants of the tour.

 

Manila, Philippines – 20 November 2017 – A tour of Metro Manila green buildings is one of the featured events at the PHILGBC National Convention held on November 20, 2017.  The tour offered participants an opportunity to see the various features of BERDE buildings and other green buildings in Metro Manila. The experience allowed attendees to learn from the experience of project owners/developers as they build their green building developments.

Buildings visited during the tour are:

  1. Net Park at Bonifacio Global City – developed by The NET Group and is currently registered for certification under the BERDE Green Building Rating System and is aimed at achieving 5-star BERDE-rating;
  2. Arya Residences at Bonifacio Global City – developed by Arthaland Corporation and is registered for certification under the BERDE Green Building Rating System;
  3. The Zuellig Building – developed by Bridgebury Realty Corporation and is a LEED-certified green building with a Platinum-rating; and,
  4. The Laguna Lake Development Authority Building – the first Philippine government building to be certified under the BERDE Green Building Rating System. The LLDA building rated 3-stars under BERDE.

Green Leaders at the Building Green CEO Forum

Makati City, Philippines – 20 November 2017 – A forum with senior management-level representatives and leaders from industry and government, dubbed as the Building Green CEO Forum held at the Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-La Hotel at Makati City, provided for a meaningful discussion on programs, initiatives and various concerns impacting the advancement of sustainability and green buildings in the property industry.

His Excellency, Ambassador Franz Jessen, delivered the keynote speech to the participants of the event. In his speech, Amb. Jessen wished the delegates to a fruitful discussion during the CEO Forum. He reiterated that “greening our buildings starts providing opportunities not only to cost effectively reduce carbon emissions while enhancing efficiency but also to reduce our use of extracted materials”.  Ambassador Franz Jessen also mentioned that “EU has donated 60 Million Euros for supporting the Philippine Government to achieve its household electrification target and to improve energy efficiency”. According to him, they believed that benchmarking can be a significant policy and program tool in promoting energy efficiency and reduction of emission in the building sector. He added that “EU remains committed to support the Philippines’ energy sector in efforts to accelerate inclusive economic growth and achieve development goals to address climate change through sustainable energy.”

Some of the topics discussed during the CEO Forum included current and future green building programs and activities from some of the National Green Building Councils within the World GBC-Asia Pacific Region, the Experience of developers, owners and policy-makers who have taken the leadership role in pushing forward green developments, and the supply and demand side of advancing green economies and the green building agenda for the country.

Celebrating a Decade of Market Transformation

Makati City, Philippines – 17 November 2017 – Philippine Green Building Council members, guests and partners from industry and government came together at the Isabela Ballroom of Makati Shangri-La hotel to celebrate PHILGBC’s 10 years of market transformation.

Members, organizations and partners that have been significant in the advancement of green buildings in the country in the past 10 years were recognized during the event.

The gala event was a venue for a meaningful exchange of ideas and learnings, and have been a great opportunity for business networking and fostering relationships for the advancement of greener buildings and green business agendas. 

“I think this is the spirit of the Philippines, you have such a power, you have such an inert spirit that cannot be extinguished.  And I think this is really happening in the green building council.  From 7 people to what we have tonight, I think it is fantastic achievement.  Let me congratulate you and let me wish you to continue to do more good work and be one of the shining light in the Asia Pacific and maybe in the world,” remarked Mr. Tai Lee Siang, World Green Building Council Chairman during the anniversary gala of the PHILGBC.

Collectively Shaping Our NAMA for the Building Sector

 

Pasay City, Philippines – 21 November 2017 – The Climate Change Commission and the Philippine Green Building Council and the National Housing Authority are working together on the country’s NAMA for the Building Sector. The National Conference on “Collectively Shaping our NAMA for the Building Sector” held on November 21, 2017 at the Luzon Ballroom of Sofitel Philippine Plaza at Pasay City is one of the events to facilitate discussion and disseminate information on the NAMA for the Building Sector.

Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) are a set of policies and actions that countries undertake as part of commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. PHILGBC is one of the partners of the Philippine government in the development of the NAMA for the Building sector.

The national conference provided for a venue for knowledge exchange on best practices from the public and private sector. Highlights of the Conference included: (1) Discussion on the NAMA for the Building Sector; (2) Green Financing; (3) Green Tools and Technologies; (4) Green Professionals; (5) Best Practices on Green Building from the WGBC Asia Pacific Network; (6) Latest trends in green developments, and (7) Launch of the BERDE Green Building Rating System version 2.0.

“Do our discussions seriously, about NAMA, about how we manage climate change, how we improve and green our environment, but most importantly today, I hope you don’t stop there. I hope you just don’t do the business as usual, now as in the green business as usual, but start something new! Begin something new and go for higher goals, higher aspiration,” said World Green Building Council Chairman, Mr. Tai Lee Siang.

“Today, as we work on the NAMA and as we work with all of you, we are now translating most of these efforts and awareness into concrete actions, which is really very exciting for our country,” remarked Mr. Ramon Rufino, Chairman of the Philippine Green Building Council.

The National Conference on “Collectively Shaping our NAMA for the Building Sector” is co-presented by the Philippine Green Building Council and the Climate Change Commission, with support from the United Nations Environment. This was held as part of the country’s observance of Climate Change Consciousness Week.

“The TODAY that we have is the outcome of our past act, and our TODAY’s act will shape our future,” said Mr. Mizaharul Alam, Climate Change Regional Director from the United Nations Environment.

Green Building Leaders Gather at the 2017 PHILGBC National Convention

Manila, Philippines – 17-21 November 2017 – Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC) hosted the biggest gathering of green building leaders in industry at the 2017 PHILGBC National Convention.  The convention showcased the convergence of leaders from the Philippines’ building and construction industry, and leaders from National Green Building Councils in the Asia Pacific region to a series of events fostering exchange of knowledge and expertise, a showcase of best practices in sustainable development, and discussions on issues and developments in greening the building industry.

The convention provided an avenue for industry discussion on latest on the BERDE Green Building Rating System and other relevant tools in greening.  It served as a significant avenue for meaningful dialogues between colleagues in industry and partners in the public and private sector.  Programs and initiatives that promotes building better and healthier places for people have been discussed in various events during the convention.

Mr. Tai Lee Siang, Chairman of the World Green Building Council, together with leaders from National GBC’s in the Asia Pacific region joins PHILGBC as it celebrates its 10th year of Market Transformation, and hosts the PHILGBC National Convention.

World Green Building Week

PHILGBC, together with more than 70 National Green Building Councils globally celebrates World Green Building Week on September 25 to October 1, 2017.

World Green Building Week is the flagship event of the global green building movement – organized by the World Green Building Council and led by its network of over 70 Green Building Councils together with their members of more than 32,000 companies.

 

The week raises awareness of green buildings around the world, highlighting how green buildings are the most effective means to achieving a range of environmental, social and economic goals, from addressing climate change to creating sustainable, healthier and better places for people.

Building Green Power Breakfast: Inspiring Green

22 June 2017, Makati City – The Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC) conducted its Power Breakfast: Inspiring Green for the Building Professionals and Service Providers Member Network of the council at the Molave Room, Dusit Thani Manila with twelve (12) member companies.

In his welcome message, PHILGBC Chair, Ramon Rufino, shared that the Power Breakfast is a roundtable discussion series created to engage with the respective Member Networks of the Council, and to stimulate meaningful dialogue on emerging green building issues in the building industry. He also encouraged the participants to share their thoughts and ideas on how the council can further promote, strengthen the promotion of green building in the country.

Air and Odor Management Chief Executive Officer, Jeroen Van Straten, co-organizer of the Power Breakfast, gave an introduction of their company and its services. He briefly discussed the parameters and acceptable indoor air quality limits that their technologies are addressing. Mr. Straten shared that company conducts assessments of the air quality and provides recommendations and solutions for the clients to be certified for clean air. AOM General Manager, Mr. Maranan added that the company offers packages based on the SS 554 Indoor Air Quality Standards of Singapore.

Mr. Mario Suelto, BERDE Technical Manager, presented the initial draft of BERDE V.2.0, discussing the changes applied in the following: BERDE Framework, Terminologies, BERDE Green Building Rating System, and Credits. In addition, he discussed how the Core Framework was refactored to refine what credits are essential in developing a green building project. In addition, Electives were introduced as optional credits that may provide wider sustainability benefits which are not part of the Core Framework.

PHILGBC Chief Executive Officer, Christopher de la Cruz facilitated the discussion after the two presentations. Questions about BERDE, and Indoor Air Quality were addressed. He mentioned that PHILGBC is currently doing a credit to credit consultation, and will conduct an internal consultation with the council members on September. Furthermore, he shared that the BERDE V.2.0 will have its soft launch at the end of July and will be officially released on November 2017 during the Building Green 2017 Conference. He also mentioned that CBP training is currently on hold until the finalization of BERDE v2.0.0.

PHILGBC Executive Director, Ms. Anna Tungol, closed the activity by reminding the members on the upcoming events of the council namely such as the Special Membership Meeting in September to coincide with celebration of the World Green Building Week and the National Convention in November which includes the WGBC Asia Pacific Network Meeting, the PHILGBC 10th Year Anniversary Gala and Building Green events such as CEO Breakfast Forum, Green Building Tour, and the Annual Conference. Featured Project: First Balfour Corporate Office

The First Balfour’s Corporate Office of the Lopez Group construction firm is the first to be awarded with BERDE Design Recognition under BERDE for the New Construction V1.0.0 in 2014.  First Balfour, Inc. redesigned and retrofitted the buildings from the land they bought to incorporate the following green features:

  • Endemic Trees for natural shading
  • Meters for clean water and reused water
  • Storage tanks for used oil
  • Rainwater collection system
  • Parking spaces for the handicap, carpool, bicycles, motorcycle, and green vehicles.
  • Illumination control and Energy Efficient Lighting
