TAGUIG CITY — July 2015 – Ramon Fernando D. Rufino, Executive Vice President of The Net Group, was awarded the prestigious “2015 Real Estate Personality of the Year” award by the Property Report Magazine in a gala held last 9 July 2015 at the Raffles and Fairmont Hotel, Makati City.
Rufino was chosen for his commitment and achievement in bringing green building and sustainability in the forefront of the real estate industry in the Philippines as Executive Vice President of The Net Group and in his exemplary leadership as Chairman of the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC).
I decided a long time ago that I would measure my success by the positive impact I can make in the world. . . the greatest positive impact I could make would be through our own real estate development business. . . . This award has inspired me to work even harder in pushing the transformation of Philippine real estate towards green building and sustainability not only with the developments of The Net Group but also through the many projects and initiatives of the Philippine Green Building Council.
In 2007, upon his return from Columbia University, where he took up his Master’s Degree in Real Estate Development, he joined like-minded and passionate people and together incorporated the PHILGBC. The PHILGBC is an Emerging Member of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), a network of more than 100 National Green Building Council around the world. At present, the PHILGBC represents the aspiration for sustainable development of more than 300 companies from various sectors of the real estate industry.
In his acceptance speech, Rufino shared that “green building in the Philippines is still far behind other countries, however, there is growing momentum” as majority of real estate companies have already “integrated green building and sustainability strategies in the way they design, build, and operate their projects.”
The environment wins with reduced impact and resource strain from projects, users win as they get healthier spaces with lower operating costs, and owners win by attracting customers, future-proofing their projects, and enhancing their corporate social responsibility.
According to Rufino, the market awareness and desire for sustainability is strong, however, there are still areas for improvement especially on the level of commitment and action. He shared the PHILGBC’s top priority “is for more and more companies and projects to secure green certification.” He noted that “only certification provides the users, the public and the government with the assurance that a project is truly green and sustainable – performing above and beyond minimum standards.”
His personal vocation for pushing sustainability and passion for real estate development has come together and now inseparable.
The Net Group is the only owner and developer with 100% of its operational portfolio powered through renewable energy, who provides free charging for electric vehicles, and the owner of the first BERDE-Certified green building. Rufino shared that the Net Group’s entire portfolio is already undergoing various stages of certification and that the Net Group “hope[s] to be the first and only developer with 100% of its projects certified as green buildings.
