The Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC) in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) held an Inception Workshop for the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project – Efficient Building Initiative (PEEP-EBI) today, October 23, 2012 at the F1 Best Western Premier Hotel, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. The workshop was conducted by the PHILGBC to finalize the work plan for the PEEP-EBI. Furthermore, the workshop sought to gather comments, issues and concerns from all parties involved in the project to facilitate further improvement of the work process and the development of the BERDE green building rating system version 1.1.0.
The announcement of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) of the need to conform with a single quality assurance framework for local green building rating systems was echoed during the workshop. Mr. Christopher C. dela Cruz, PHILGBC Chairman, shared that the Inception Workshop was a mechanism to collect inputs and report outcomes and deliverables, and that the PHILGBC sees this partnership as an opportunity of the private sector to work with the national government and ensure alignment with the government’s objectives.
DOE Undersecretary Loreta Ayson, CESO I, acknowledged the expertise of the PHILGBC in green building rating systems development, and assured the commitment of the DOE in the implementation of the project. She shares that the project “signals that the government is willing to support and partner with the green building sector”, and that “the EBI is the beginning of something, a catalyst of a future bandwagon in the building sector, that will lead to a paradigm shift in green building.”
A backgrounder on PEEP-EBI was presented, followed by a discussion on the development process undertaken by BERDE version 1.0.0. Dialogues during the workshop focused on BERDE-related professional education programs, surveillance programs for BERDE-Certified buildings, promotion of the green building rating schemes, and the development of new green building rating schemes specific to building types. Professionals in the workshop shared their experiences related to the BERDE green building rating system including the BERDE registration of a government building and the development of a framework for green communities.
