Expressions of Interest – 2017 Better Places for People Case Study Report

 

June 2017, Taguig City—The Philippine Green Building Council is one of the National Green Building Councils participating in the World Green Building Council’s global project—Better Places for People. Better Places for People aims to create a world wherein buildings are good for the environment, and support healthier, happier and more productive lives for those who occupy them.

Better Places for People is launching its 2017 Expressions of Interest for Case Studies for a new report on green and healthy buildings.

The 2016 Case Study report, “Building the Business Case: Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Green offices,” was a success. The report featured several new case studies of buildings all around that world that have implemented the metrics framework outlined in the World Green Building Council’s 2014 report, “Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Offices: The next chapter for green building”. The 2016 Case Study Report also included research by four Green Building Councils on their markets and the buildings in their countries which have been using health and wellbeing as a tool to attract tenants and support occupants.

Opportunity for your Green & Healthy Building to be Showcased. A follow-up report is to be published this year and will be open to reporting all other building-occupancy types, not just offices. We encourage you to submit your case study and have the potential to be part of the 15 buildings globally that will be showcased by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) in the report.

What are green and healthy buildings? Green and Healthy Buildings are developments that are environmentally-responsible, resource-efficient, and improves the health, wellbeing, and productivity of people occupying them.

What buildings qualify for the Case Study Report? All building occupancy types may be considered for the case study report—residential, retail, office, mixed-use developments, and open-spaces, among others.

When is the deadline? The Expression of Interest to develop a case study will close on 4 July 2017 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

To have your project considered for the 2017 Better Places for People Case Study Report, kindly accomplish an online form on your Expression of Interest (EOI), accessible at this link. Your submission constitutes an intention to develop a full case study with WorldGBC for publication in the final Case Study report (and potentially other avenues) provided your case study is accepted.

WGBC APN Mid-Year Meeting

Collaborating and complementing one another’s efforts in addressing region-specific challenges and creating opportunities in green building.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – April 11, 2017 – Leaders of 12 national Green Building Councils in the Asia Pacific Region gathered together in Kuala Lumpur for the biannual meeting of World Green Building Council – Asia Pacific Network (WorldGBC-APN).  The two-day WorldGBC-APN Mid-Year Meeting was hosted by the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC). The WorldGBC APN Meetings serve as a powerful and collaborative platform for the APN network to exchange knowledge, ideas, solutions, work plans on the green transformation of markets in the region. It is also an opportunity where the green building leaders share the highlights of their councils and discuss the issues they are facing.

WorldGBC and APN Chair, Tai Lee Siang provided an inspiring opening message recalling how the organization evolved from being non-existent to becoming the global leader in green building and the source of knowledge and business strategies on sustainability. Currently there are 76 national GBCs worldwide –  39 Established Members, 11 Emerging Members and 29 Prospective Members.

WorldGBC Global strategy, governance, projects and events were provided by the WorldGBC staff. Among the project shared are: Better Places for People, Building Efficiency Accelerator and Net Zero.

The APN Regional Manager, Joelle Chen lead the discussion on the APN Strategy and workplan. Included in the agenda were regional and local issues such as raising the profile of the APN and capacity building strategies — revenue generation, members engagement and retention program. Some outcomes of the meeting include: development of a series of mini-reports of the Business Case for Green Buildings and the creation of a Regional Leadership Consortium led by the Established GBCs and regional partners.

The year-end APN Meeting will be hosted by the PHILGBC in November during the National Convention which included activities such as: CEO Forum, Green Building Tour, PHILGBC 10th year Gala Dinner, and the Building Green Conference.

Pasay City – September 2015 – The Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC) conducted Building Green Conference (BG15) last September 25, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City with the theme “Powering Positive Change”.

As a proud Emerging member of the World Green Building Council, the PHILGBC organized BG15 in conjunction with the celebration of the World Green Building Week. In his Opening Remarks, PHILGBC Chairman Ramon D. Rufino shared “this is the biggest and best opportunity on both a local and global scale for all of us to shine a spotlight on our movement on our collection vision to create sustainable building environments.”

The BG Conference brings together green builders from the academe, civil society, government, business, professionals and other stakeholders of the building and construction industry to discuss and learn about the sustainability initiatives from the experts from the public and private sector. PHILGBC features global, regional and local issues, breakthroughs, practices and technologies for more sustainable buildings.

He shared that BG15 is an opportunity to educate the industry members on green building to encourage them to take actions in pushing the real estate industry from gray to green.

Local and international experts during the BG15 Conference include: Carlos Rufino, Chairman of ULI PH and President of The Net Group; Antonio Maralit, Sustainability Director of De La Salle University; Julia Nebrija, Chair of Inclusive Mobility Network; Gregers Reimann, Managing Director of IEN Consultants (Malaysia), and Eric Tomich, Associate of SOM (HK).

Participation from government include: Climate Change Commission, Department of Energy, and Mandaue City. Key presentations from Sec. Mary Ann Lucille Sering of the Climate Change Commission and Undersecretary Loreta G. Ayson of the Department of Energy were shared with the audience.

Highlight of this year’s BG15 Conference is the presence of the WorldGBC Founding Officer, Nellie Cheng and the two winners of the 2014 WorldGBC – Asia Pacific Network (WGBC-APN) Awards – Mr. HC Vinakaya of ITC Limited India and Mr. Phil Smith of Collingridge and Smith Architects New Zealand.

Overwhelming evidence links office design with staff health and productivity, finds new WorldGBC report 

Wednesday 8 October 2014: A new report from the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) finds overwhelming evidence that office design significantly impacts the health, wellbeing and productivity of staff.

Health, wellbeing and productivity in offices: The next chapter for green building finds that a range of factors – from air quality and lighting, to views of nature and interior layout – can affect the h
ealth, satisfaction and job performance of office workers.

The report – sponsored by JLL, Lend Lease and Skanska – also presents a simple toolkit that businesses can use to measure the health, wellbeing and productivity of their buildings and inform financial decision-making.

Understanding the link between workers and their workplace helps to drive the business case for higher quality, healthy and greener buildings, valued by investors, developers and tenants alike.

With salaries and benefits typically responsible for 90 percent of an organization's expenditure, any higher construction or occupation costs are far outweighed by even small improvements in staff performance.

Jane Henley, CEO of the World Green Building Council, said: The evidence linking good office design and improved health, wellbeing and productivity of staff is now overwhelming. There is unquestionably a clear business case for investing in, developing and occupying healthier, greener buildings.

Most businesses are already sitting on a treasure trove of information that can have an immediate impact on their two biggest expenses – people and buildings. Understanding the relationship between the two can help businesses achieve significant competitive advantage.

Christopher de la Cruz, CEO of the Philippine Green Building Council, said: The real value of businesses lies in its greatest asset – its people. This report would help businesses better understand how to take care of its 'greatest asset' by investing in green and healthy buildings and reap real and tangible benefits.

Raymond Rufino, Chairman of the Philippine Green Building Council, said: A majority of the local conversations we have regarding the economic attractiveness of green buildings tend to focus on the savings on utility and operating costs. With the help of this report, we hope our future discussions center on what we believe to be the most powerful benefit of green buildings to an enterprise: a workforce with better health, higher productivity, and enhanced well-being.

Claudia Hamm, Head of Strategic Workplace (EMEA) at JLL, said: Major corporate clients are now recognizing the business benefits and productivity gains of buildings which bring out the best in their employees and are increasingly making their strategic real estate decisions with these in mind. This report reinforces the view that a building's impact on its occupants must be included within financial considerations.

Geoff Dutaillis, Group Head of Sustainability at Lend Lease, said: Whatever business you are in, you are in the business of people. How a building 'works for people' should be the priority question. This report provides further evidence that workplaces with clean air, natural daylight and engaging and adaptable layouts all contribute to making healthier, happier and more motivated individuals who create stronger, more resilient and profitable companies.

Health, wellbeing and productivity in offices builds upon the 2013 WorldGBC report The Business Case for Green Building which featured a chapter on the health and productivity benefits of green buildings.

The report was launched in London on 24 September as part of World Green Building Week. Global launch events hosted by Green Building Councils followed in Athens, Greece (24 Sep), Sydney, Australia (25 Sep), Manila, Philippines (25 Sep), Sofia, Bulgaria (26 Sep) and Bogota, Colombia (1-2 Oct). Summary of evidence

  • Indoor air quality: A comprehensive body of research suggests that better indoor air quality (low concentrations of CO2 and pollutants and high ventilation rates) can lead to productivity improvements of 8-11%.
  • Thermal comfort: Research demonstrates that thermal comfort has a significant impact on workplace satisfaction and modest degrees of personal control over thermal comfort can return single digit improvements in productivity.
  • Lighting and views of nature: Several studies have estimated productivity gains as a result of proximity to windows, with experts now thinking that views from windows are probably the more significant factor, particularly where the view offers a connection to nature.
  • Noise and acoustics: Research suggests that being productive in the modern knowledge-based office is practically impossible when noise provides an unwanted distraction. This can be a major cause of dissatisfaction amongst occupants.
  • Interior layout: The way the interior of an office is configured (including workstation density and configuration of work space, breakout space and social space) has been found to have an impact on concentration, collaboration, confidentiality and creativity.
  • Active design and exercise: Health can be improved through exercise, and so active design within a building, and access to services and amenities such as gyms, bicycle storage and green space can help to encourage healthier lifestyles of building occupants.

Toolkit to measure health, wellbeing and productivity

  • Financial metrics: Absenteeism, staff turnover, revenue breakdown (by department or per building), medical costs and complaints, and physical complaints.
  • Perceptual metrics: Studies which test a range of self-reported attitudes into health, wellbeing and productivity in the workplace can contain a wealth of information for improving office performance.
  • Physical metrics: Direct measures of the physical office environment, such as temperature, are key to measuring the effect on the health, wellbeing and productivity of workers. Exciting developments in this area such as portable and wearable technology are likely to substantially expand our understanding.
